MCDO Student Exchange Program
The MCDO Student Exchange Program (SEP) is a north-south collaboration that dates back more than 10 years ago when MCDO started hosting groups of Swedish students in Kisoro district. The students who were coming from Österlens Folk High School and Nikolai High School (now called Skolstaden School) were driven by the desire to learn about our community projects in Kisoro.
Welcome to the MCDO Student Exchange Program (SEP)
Background to the program
The MCDO Student Exchange Program (SEP) is a north-south collaboration that dates back more than 10 years ago when MCDO started hosting groups of Swedish students in the Kisoro district. The students who were coming from Österlens Folk High School and Nikolai High School (now called Skolstaden School) were driven by the desire to learn about our community projects in Kisoro.
Although MCDO no longer receives students from Österlens, each year we host a group of 10-15 students plus teachers from Skolstaden. This collaboration has promoted cross-cultural learning between the Swedish community and the people of the Kisoro district. Some of the well-wishers that support our Sponsorship Program are among the students who have visited MCDO in the past.
MCDO, Kisoro Vision School, and Nikolai High School Partnership
Mgahinga Community Development Organization has initiated a new student exchange program whose goal is to advance cross-cultural learning by connecting Uganda students to educational institutions abroad. The program aims to advance learning by giving an opportunity to Ugandan students to visit foreign schools and other institutions for cross-cultural learning.
Under this program, MCDO gives priority to students from the Kisoro district, which is our area of operation. The program launched in November 2011 where a group of 10 students from Kisoro Vision Secondary School had their first overseas trip to Sweden. In October 2013, another group of students from Kisoro visited Sweden as well. This trip was a life-changing experience for the participants. This was the first overseas trip for all the students. Not only do the students gain insightful experiences, but also influence their views and perspectives of the world.
This is still a pilot program, but we are looking at expanding the exchange trips to other countries in Europe and North America. With over 10 years of running the exchange education program, we are open to other new partnerships, high school, and higher learning institutions.
